The Finnish national box lacrosse team has been selected and will face Switzerland in their first match on September 21st. All tournament games, held in Utica, USA, will be streamed live, making it easy to follow the team’s performance. Finland will start the tournament with three consecutive game days: after Switzerland, they will face Greece, and in the final group stage game on Monday, September 23rd, Finland will meet Japan.

This year, as many as 28 teams are participating in the World Box Lacrosse Championships, resulting in a very intense schedule. After the first three group-stage games, the tournament will move directly into the knockout phase. Finland's group is interesting as, besides the more familiar Switzerland, they will face Greece, a newcomer to the tournament, and Japan, a top country in the field- and Sixes lacrosse. Team captain Markus Mattila sees Japan as a dangerous opponent: “It is well known that the Japanese are individually very strong, skillful with their sticks, and extremely athletic. In other lacrosse disciplines, we would surely lose, but in box lacrosse, we have the advantage of experience.” Based on a solid team style of play, Finland enters the tournament ranked 6th globally. Long Preparation

The Finnish men's national team began preparing in October 2023 with the first National Team camp. The National Team squad practiced monthly in sports halls, and as spring arrived, the training moved to Park field in Turku, which has a rink with a rubber crumb surface needed for the sport. After the training camp at the end of July, the coaching staff made the final selections, and the team has now been announced. National team head coach Tracey Kelusky believes in his team’s abilities: “Our goal has always been to play our best game every time we step on the floor. For each individual to strive for their best individual performance. In doing so, we collectively take the steps to ensure our team's goals are met. Similarly, we play with the mindset of never being satisfied with any results from the past. We are very excited to participate in this year's world lacrosse championships, as I feel we have assembled our best group to date.  We and myself personally are looking forward to the opportunity to yet again put Finland on the map as a top lacrosse country.”

Around midday on September 18, 2024, the players of the first Finnish women’s box lacrosse national team began arriving at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport with large suitcases. Named bags were handed out, and the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement. Soon, they would board a flight to Boston, followed by a 4 hour bus ride to Utica. For most players, this trip would be their first time in the United States. The team had clear rules: each player was responsible for their roommate the entire journey. "We were on edge until the last minute, wondering if the uniforms would make it," said team captain Suvi Onne when sharing the bags with uniforms to everyone. The first-ever women’s box lacrosse championship match in history (Finland vs. Canada) was an unforgettable experience for the entire team. It felt both like a privilege and an earned opportunity to play in the tournament, considering the significant effort made by the coaches, staff, and players to assemble the team in such a short time. "When our national anthem started playing before that first game, the entire national team project became tangible—'we’re really here, and now it’s time to play,'" recalled team vice-captain Katariina Bitter. Bitter had the honor of delivering the first cross-check in women’s box lacrosse championship history when she stripped the ball from Canada’s Megan Kinna, flooring the Canadian star shortly after the opening whistle. However, what stood out most for Bitter from the tournament was her amazing teammates: "The team spirit was better than I could have ever imagined." The tournament was historic in many ways for both women’s lacrosse and Finnish lacrosse as a whole.

Puolen päivän aikaan 18.9.2024 naisten ensimmäisen boxmaajoukkueen pelaajat alkavat saapua Helsinki-Vantaan lentokentälle suurien matkalaukkujen kanssa. Nimikoituja pusseja jaetaan ja ilmassa on odottava ja innostunut tunnelma. Pian noustaisiin lentokoneeseen Bostoniin, josta bussilla olisi vielä 4 tunnin ajomatka Uticaan. Suurelle osalle pelaajia, tämä reissu tulee olemaan ensimmäinen kerta Yhdysvalloissa. Joukkueella on selvät säännöt: omasta huonekaverista pidetään huolta perille asti.
