Women´s sixes first camp and meeting the new head coach

4. huhtikuuta 2025

Women's national team has started its journey towards the Sixes European Championships. The players were thrilled to meet the new head coach Lesley Hawke in the first camp in February.

Finnish lacrosse history was made in Pajulahti Sports Center mid-February as the ladies had their first ever Sixes national team camp weekend, lead by the women's Sixes national team head coach Lesley Hawke, who has earned her stripes in her home country Canada coaching both field and box lacrosse. We were beyond excited to finally meet her, and it's safe to say we were not disapppointed! Joakim “Jokke” Miller, known also for coaching the women's box squad and Turku Titans Ladies, stepped up to help Hawke out as an assistant coach.

On Friday night after brief introductions were made, we got to take over the Pajulahti turf. During a stick skills focused session the coaches and the players had an excellent chance at getting to know each other a little better while working on the basics. It was a pleasure seeing so many newer players from Turku Titans and Helsinki Huskies join the camp and work hard with more experienced players. Spirits were high and we were all excited to be starting this journey together and dive deep into Sixes and all of the speed the discipline has to offer!

On Saturday, emphasis was indeed on speed and looking at out heart rates, you could tell. In addition to diving deep into running technique and 30-30-30 sprints, Lesley introduced us to Laxfit HIIT workouts, in which high-intensity interval training is paired with stick skills and game-like exercises. We highly appreciated that both of the coaches prayed what they preach and joined in for the intensive Laxfit session with us – you could feel the team spirit in the air when everyone cheered each other on to push through a little bit longer. Altogether the drills we did provided us with plenty to take back home to our individual training and to our club practices.

To balance out the high-tempo training, we had two theory sessions, where the players were divided into groups to gather information about the topics on hand and then present them to the rest of the group. In the first theory session we tackled the Sixes rules, which most of us have acquainted ourselves with in the past three summers. However, when it comes to rules, some revising never did any harm. While the groups presented their topics, we all came to realise just how much Sixes weaves field to box and vice versa. It's inspiring how new the game still is and how everyone in the lacrosse community is still learning how to best play it! The second session was all about mental game and its importance. It provided us with a ton to think about in terms of the benefits of visualisation, relaxation, positive self-talk and a focus plan in an atlete's game and life overall.

Let's just say that by Sunday morning we all could feel our legs. Nevertheless we didn't let that budge our work ethic, which Hawke complimented us on. Sunday was the most game-like practice day and in the end there was some scrimmage action, too. The final whistle was blown too soon, at least based on the disappointed murmur. However that quite quickly turned into excited anticipation as Hawke and Miller wrapped the weekend up. These ladies are ready to put in the work for the ECs!

Head coach Lesley Hawke’s comment:

Travelling to Finland and meeting the players who hope to make up the National Team Sixes Squad was an experience unmatched.

From the minute I landed in Helsinki and travelled to Pajulahti, I was embraced by all of the participants and it set the stage for a fantastic weekend of lacrosse. The players were keen, ready to learn and expand on what they already knew about the game.

They were enthusiastic and put in the work both on and off the field.

What really impressed me the most was knowing that these players all came from different clubs and were willing to step out of their comfort zones and work with people they usually play against. That to me is the true spirit of a National team and they all embraced it. There were lots of laughs and fun to be had amongst the gruelling speed work and conditioning drills.

Ending the weekend with a Sixes scrimmage left me excited to return and continue my work with this amazing program. And huge thanks to Jokke for stepping up to help me coach. You can tell he already has an amazing rapport with the players and I look forward to building on that together.

Naisten lacrosse sixes maajoukkue Suomi
4. huhtikuuta 2025

Around midday on September 18, 2024, the players of the first Finnish women’s box lacrosse national team began arriving at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport with large suitcases. Named bags were handed out, and the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement. Soon, they would board a flight to Boston, followed by a 4 hour bus ride to Utica. For most players, this trip would be their first time in the United States. The team had clear rules: each player was responsible for their roommate the entire journey. "We were on edge until the last minute, wondering if the uniforms would make it," said team captain Suvi Onne when sharing the bags with uniforms to everyone. The first-ever women’s box lacrosse championship match in history (Finland vs. Canada) was an unforgettable experience for the entire team. It felt both like a privilege and an earned opportunity to play in the tournament, considering the significant effort made by the coaches, staff, and players to assemble the team in such a short time. "When our national anthem started playing before that first game, the entire national team project became tangible—'we’re really here, and now it’s time to play,'" recalled team vice-captain Katariina Bitter. Bitter had the honor of delivering the first cross-check in women’s box lacrosse championship history when she stripped the ball from Canada’s Megan Kinna, flooring the Canadian star shortly after the opening whistle. However, what stood out most for Bitter from the tournament was her amazing teammates: "The team spirit was better than I could have ever imagined." The tournament was historic in many ways for both women’s lacrosse and Finnish lacrosse as a whole.

Puolen päivän aikaan 18.9.2024 naisten ensimmäisen boxmaajoukkueen pelaajat alkavat saapua Helsinki-Vantaan lentokentälle suurien matkalaukkujen kanssa. Nimikoituja pusseja jaetaan ja ilmassa on odottava ja innostunut tunnelma. Pian noustaisiin lentokoneeseen Bostoniin, josta bussilla olisi vielä 4 tunnin ajomatka Uticaan. Suurelle osalle pelaajia, tämä reissu tulee olemaan ensimmäinen kerta Yhdysvalloissa. Joukkueella on selvät säännöt: omasta huonekaverista pidetään huolta perille asti.
